SPM turret buoy commissioning offshore Mexico

Off the coast of Mexico, TRIBE. Engineering worked on a challenging offshore project involving Single Point Mooring (SPM) Turret Buoys. These buoys serve as a critical link between offshore tankers and onshore infrastructure. They enable the safe loading and unloading of liquid products, eliminating the need for traditional port facilities.

Designed for dynamic motion and heavy-duty environments

An SPM Turret Buoy is designed for continuous movement. Thanks to the turret design, a tanker can rotate freely around the buoy, automatically aligning itself with the prevailing environmental conditions. This so-called weathervaning-principle ensures that the forces on the mooring system are minimized, while the buoy and the vessel maintain a stable position.

The central turret is anchored to the seabed and continuously absorbs enormous loads via the mooring system. Simultaneously, the outer part of the buoy rotates with the vessel. This ensures that piping, valves, and connections remain protected against torsion and wear. Within these buoys, mechanical structures, process installations, hydraulics, electrical engineering, and automation converge, all designed for a lifespan of decades in a harsh offshore environment.

Commissioning and repairs

Within this project, TRIBE. Engineering was responsible for the commissioning of the SPM buoys. This involved inspecting, testing, and operationalizing all systems in accordance with the applicable offshore standards. During this phase, damaged and obsolete components were also replaced to ensure the installation returned to full operational reliability.

Because SPM buoys are often in continuous operation, inspections and repairs are carried out while the buoys remain offshore. This requires a precise approach and a thorough understanding of both the system and the operational reality.

The importance of system integration

The performance of an SPM buoy stands or falls with correct system integration. The buoys were linked to existing offshore pipelines and onshore control systems, providing operators with real-time insight into process and safety data. This integration is essential for ensuring that the loading and unloading of tankers proceeds in a controlled and safe manner, without unnecessary downtime.
