CERTAINTY AT SEA: COMMISSIONING ON A PONTOON
On the horizon of the Fehmarnbelt lies a structure that rarely draws attention, yet plays a crucial role in maritime operations. Not a tunnel section or a drilling platform, but a multifunctional pontoon of approximately 100 metres in length. A vessel that serves as a supporting work platform within the project, and whose performance is key to the feasibility of offshore operations.
TRIBE Engineering contributed to this project through the system integration and commissioning of the winches on the pontoon, including the drives and the software-based coordination between the various installations.
A European megaproject
With a total length of approximately 18 kilometres, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel will become a fixed road and rail link between Germany and Denmark, making it the longest immersed tunnel in the world. Projects of this scale place high demands on all supporting assets deployed during construction.
On maritime work platforms, this means not only robust hardware, but above all reliably functioning systems. Winches, drives and control systems must continue to operate predictably and safely under changing conditions, in an environment where downtime has an immediate impact on project progress.
From Installation to Operation
TRIBE Engineering supported the system integration and commissioning of the winches on the pontoon, including the drives and the software. We guided the critical transition from installation to operational use by testing and fine-tuning the systems under real-life conditions. During this phase, we analyzed and resolved issues that emerged during commissioning and ensured further integration of the onboard installations. Through this hands-on involvement, we contributed to the stable operation of the winch system within the maritime environment in which the pontoon is deployed.
Integrated Systems as the Result
After completion of the integration and commissioning activities, the pontoon was successfully shipped from the Polish shipyard to Denmark. What began as a set of separate installations has since evolved into an operational work platform within a large-scale infrastructure project.
TRIBE Engineering looks back on this contribution with pride. Pride in the craft, in the collaboration, and in the role that careful system integration and commissioning play in the reliable operation of complex maritime installations.
